Korean war US Field Telephone Set TA-312/PT -

Field phones were a crucial piece of equipment during the Korean war. This was one of the primary means in which the fornt lines communicated with the rear. one big advantage of this telephone was its reliability. One major disadvantage was the fact that land lines had to be ran to make them work. The job of running the lines and keeping them operational could be very hazardous.

The item featured here is a filed phone Type TA-312/PT. As issued by the US armed forces during the Korean war. The phone came enclosed in a canvis carrying bag. complete with a brass zipper that was used to secure the bag closed. The side of the bag has an opening to allow for the crank mechanism to be accessible. some of the round openings are re-enforced with brown leather inserts.

The predecessor to this phone was the Type EE-8 which was employed during WWII.

The same basic telephone saw service clear into the 1980's. Even today some parts of the military continue to use this system.

The handset has a push button covered with a rubber enclosure. This provided some protection against the weather. The button was pushed down when the soldier spoke and released to listen to incoming communications.
