pilots and sailors were in constant danger of floating adrift in the ocean. Whether the aircraft was
shut down or the ship was sunk the US Navy wanted their personnel to have the necessary survival
equipment to make it as long as possible while waiting for rescue.
One of the main factors in surviving in the oceas is drinking water. The US Navy developed a process
where water was canned and distributed in survival kits. The cans were painted gray. They were shipped
in cardboard boxes where the front of the box was marked as follows:
