US ARMY M9 PHROBIS BAYONET
The M-16 rifle was introduced in the 1960's. The bayonet that was employed at that time was very
similar to the WWII design. It worked well and its use lasted for many years.
The mid-1980's saw the introduction of the M-9 Phrobis bayonet. this was quite an improvement
from the previous bayonet.
The item featured here is the M-9 Phrobis bayonet for the M-16 rifle. Made by Buck. Some of
the improvements introduced include the following:
- A quick release scabbard
- Wire cutter
- Built-in sharpening stone
- Sure grip handle
- Hard plastic scabbard with a pouch
The side view of the scabbard shows the quick release feature. The scabbard is divided in two parts.
The base that attaches to the belt and the section that holds the blade. The later can be removed from
the belt by pushing on two tabs located on the side of the base.
The back of the scabbard has a built-in sharpening stone. covered by a heavy canvis flap that secures
shut via the use of a metal snap.
The scabbard hooks up with the blade of the bayonet to act as a wire cutter. The tip of
the blade had an opening that allowed it to hook up with the tip of the scabbard (pictured
below).
