The award was built of three different parts where the top section consisted of a rectangular bar with an oval in the center. This was attached to another rectangular section with the word "Rifleman" and the date of 1899. The last section consists of a circle with the face of a bear in the center. The words "National Guard of California Eureka" are placed in the perimeter.

The back of the shooting award has a pin on the upper section. The name of the manufacturer is displayed here.
