Vietnam War 1963 US Air Force Flight Bag
Air superiority is one of the key elements in any conflict. The United States held this advantage from the
start of the war.
The use of ject fighters, helicopters, small planes, etc. brought about the need for a large number of
pilots. These individuals were issued flight helmets, gloves, oxygen masks, flight suits, etc. They
needed a way to carry all these items from the barracks to the aircraft. Hence the birth of the
flight bag.
The flight bag consists of a large canvis bag with a zipper in the center and two heavy duty handles.
The zippers were made of brass in the early days and then switched to aluminum. Re-enforcements were
applied to the sides of the bags to better handle the heavy loads.
Blue or blank ink stamps were placed on some of the bags. The information found in the stamps included
date of manufacturing, the name of the manufacturer, contract number, etc. Not all bags were marked the
same way or at all.
The problem with this type of nomenclature is that it tends to fade over time.
