US 5TH Ranger Special Forces Tunic - Vietnam War
This is a fine example of the tunics used by the US Army 5th Ranger Battalion
during the Vietnam war.
The tunic is of poplin construction. This is an earlier version.
with four pocket design. Hidden green plastic buttons. Of special
interest are the theater made patches. It was a fairly common practice for
the Special Forces to have their patches manufactured by local
individuals. All hand made.
The upper pockets of the uniform were slanted. This design allowed the soldier
easier access to the contents of the pockets when wearing the full combat load
bearing gear. Flaps were provided to secure the pockets shut. All buttons
would remain hidden from view when the tunic was closed. This fact eliminated
the chances of the uniform getting snagged by branches when running through
the jungle.
The uniform retains the original white cotton tags. One located near the
collar. The other behind one of the lower pockets.
The tags contain information of value for the collector.
Data found there includes: Manufacturing date, manufacturer's name, material of
construction, color, etc. It was not uncommon for the tags to fall off from
normal wear.
