US AAF P-51 Gun Camera Type N-6

This is a US Army Air Force Aircrtaft gun camera. Type N-6. This camara was mounted on the wings of the P-51 aircraft. They were activated every time the guns were fired. Other cameras were set to film in a continuous feed.

Camaras like this one are responsible for much of the aerial footage we have today of WWII dog fights and ground attack operations.





All metal construction. very stout. Design to take the rigors of combat flying. The back portion has a flap that hinges at one end. Opening this enclosure provides access to the film cartridge. The inside of the cover has the following writing in white paint:

Four posts are located in the bottom section of the camara. These were employed to attach the camara to the bottom of the wing. The lense of the camara could be changed depending on the lighting conditions. Multiple white font markings are placed throughout the camera. A metal tag is also attached to the side.

A lever controls a door that opens revealing the film housing. The lense is fairly small. It did not work well for night operations. It has a yellow lense to help protect against sun glare.

The top of the camera has two levels designed to ensure the camera is mounted properly to the wing.
