WWII US Army Radio Remote Control Unit -
This is a US Army field gear item. As issued during World War two.
Triangulation is the process of determining the location of a point by measuring angles to it from known points at
either end of a fixed baseline, rather than measuring distances to the point directly. The point can then be fixed as
the third point of a triangle with one known side and two known angles.
The Germans and Japanese forces were able to triangulate the signals produced by American radios. Once the position
of the source of the signal was found, they were able to summon an artillery barrage on the position. The American
forces countered this technique by creating a remote control signal generator. This piece of equipment was placed
a distance away from the headquarters. In the event of being detected, the artillery shells would hit a lone piece
of equipment as opposed to the headquarters themselves.
