WWII BRITISH PARATROOPER HELMET - The use of airborne troops was a new concept invented in WWII. Airborne operations allowed soldiers to be inserted behind enemy lines. The soldiers who performed the jumps were known as paratroopers. These units had to be pretty much self-sufficient because it was very difficult for them to be resupplied.

Airborne operation required the invention of new equipment. The Paratrooper helmet is born.

Not everyone was able to become a paratropper. The physical and mental training that had to be endured was exhausting. The elite nature of the units have made all of their gear a top military collectible in the field.

The helmet featured here is an example of the type of helmet worn by the British paratroopers during WWII. The picture illustrates how a camo net was used to disguise the headgear.

The headliner was "suspended" in order to give the helmet room to move and not transfer the motion to the head of the soldier. This suspension mechanism also helped mitigate the impact caused by the landing.

Most modern military helmets saw their birth during World War One. The need to address the multitude of head wounds in the trenches was the foundation for the widespread development and deployment of helmets.

This section discusses several of the military helmets of the world.

In many cases the use of the spilled over into non-military applications such as police and civil defense. most of the helmets during WWI and WWII were constructed of a combination of metal and leather.
