WWII GERMAN BLACK WOUND BADGE -

This is a WWII German wound badge. Black class. High quality construction. Of oval shape. Wreaths surround the perimeter of the badge, only interrupted by a bow placed in the bottom portion. The main body has very nice pebbling. The silhoutte of a German helmet (M-35 or M-40) is placed in the center of the badge. Two swords cross the helmet from the back.

The rear portion of the badge is hollowed. A vertical pin is used to secure the award to the loops of the tunic of the recipient. Some black wound badges are marked but others are not.

The badge was issued in three classes:
  1. Black - Issued for 1 to 2 wounds
  2. Silver - Issued for 3 to 4 wounds
  3. Gold - Issued for 5 or more wounds
The black badge was issued in an envelope. The other two came in boxes. All badges had a certificate of award.

The same basic design was employed during WWI. The main difference was that the WWII version has a swastika in the helmet.

The wound badge featured here shows normal wear. Most of the original paint is present. The pin is attached properly. The back shows minor surface rust.

COLLECTING BLACK WOUND BADGES
Collecting Third Reich memorabilia is a field that has been growing since the days the GI's rummaged around Europe bringing back military souvenirs. German soldiers wore many of their awards on their uniforms when they went to battle. Once the soldier was killed or captured, the American soldiers would take the awards as war trophies. Eventually all these pieces came back to the United States where military history enthusiasts began to collect them.
