The War Merit Cross with swords was a civilian award instituted in 1939. This medal was given
for deeds which did not merit an iron cross. There were two basic types; with swords and without swords.
The award with swords was issued to civilians who provided significant contributions to the war
effort in areas other than battle. Things such as factories, communications, etc. but less
involved in combat related activities than the cross with swords.
This is the most common style of medal. This medal is reproduced fairly heavily.
