HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH A SAMURAI SWORD -
This section of the website provides tips on the types of photos we need to get in order to review a Samurai sword. A step by step tutorial
on how to take the pictures.
One of the most important steps is to make sure that the photos are clear. Blurry photos do not provide enough information for the
analysis.
The photographs we need are:
1 |
Photos of the entire sword |
2 |
The length of the blade |
3 |
Photos of the entire blade |
4 |
Photos of any damage to the blade |
5 |
Photos of both sides of the tang |
This information is brought to you courtesy of

STEP - 1
Anatomy of the sword
|
The length of the blade is an important aspect of the sword. Measure it as shown below. |
STEP - 2
Photographing the entire sword.
|
Photograph the entire sword. We need to see all the components at one time. |
STEP - 3
How to take pictures of the tang.
The tang contains most of the information about the sword. The handle must be removed to access the tang.
|
It is of utmost importance that both sides of the tang be photographed. you must
do this even if the sword does not have a signature. |
|
Photograph any markings to the blade (in addition to the signature). |
STEP - 4
How to take pictures of the Samurai sword blade
|
Take a picture of the entire blade. Both sides preferably. |
|
Sometimes the blade has a wavy pattern on the edge. Take a picture of that. |
Take a close up picture of the tip of the blade.
Take pictures of any damage to the blade.
