This is the standard grenade for the Japanese armed forces during WWII. Construction consisted of grooved iron casing. The top unscrews to expose the firing mechanism and explosive charge.

The inert Japanese granades were brought back into the US by the soldiers returning home. Most of these items were destroyed or re-issued to other armies after the war. These factors contribute to the rarity of the grenade.
