The bayonet model 1874 was employed by French armed forces at the turn of the century. The entire bayonet measured approximately
26 inches in length.
the handle is made of wood with a brass pommel. The wooden grips are being held by two rivets.
The scabbard is of metal construction. It has a bracket to one side. This is how the bayonet attached to the side of the belt. A
single rivet is also found near the throat. This is how the blade guides were held inside the scabbard. the tip ends is a
finnial.
The spine of the blade is engraved with markings that include the year 1874. Hence the name of the model. Additional markings
are stamped on one side at the base of the blade. These markings consists of circles. one of them which contains the letter M.
These are proof marks.
The quillon is round in shape and ends in a small ball. The side of the quillon is stamped with what appears to be a serial number.
This is a production number.
