The Royal Air Force (RAF) is the air force of the United Kingdom and the oldest independent air force in the world. Formed on 1 April 1918, the RAF has taken a significant role in British military history ever since, playing a large part in World War II and in more recent conflicts.
The item featured here was issued during WWII to pilots of the RAF. It is a tropical helmet. Of cloth construction with a series of
ventilation holes applied throughout the entire body. A leather chin strap is part of the equipment. The helmet does not have any
tags or markings.
The back of the helmet has four straps with snaps. These were used to route the communication wires so that they would not get in
the way of the pilot while in flight. A fifth strap is found. This one is placed in the center and has a buckle.
The snaps are of metal construction and have a nice, shiny coat of dark brown paint.
The side of the halmet comes with two large, round rubber cups. This is where the speakers for the communication system would
be placed. There is a series of three metal snaps on each side of the front. They were used to secure the oxygen mask. The
pilot could snap it in three different positions depensding on the size of the face.
