US MILITARY UNIFORMS OF THE KOREAN WAR - The Korean war is also known as the forgotten war. The fighting during this conflict was very fierce. Much of the equipment used was very similar to the one employed during WWII. Much of the same materials were used. For example, the US Marine Corps combat uniform was manufactured of HBT (herringbone twill) just as in the previous conflict.

This is an example of a combat uniform.

This page provides a comprehensive look at the uniforms from the period. The information given allows the military collector the ability to identify the various unifoems employed by the United States armed forces. The armed forces were very particular about how personnel wore, stored and took care of their uniforms. Here are some specifications of what was expected:

Foot Locker
Personal items and some clothing are kept in the foot locker. When preparing for inspection in quarters, the foot locker shall be arranged according to the unit SOP (Standard Operating Procedures). Only clean clothing should be kept in the foot locker, since dirty clothing will soil the clean clothing. The lower part of the foot locker is used for the nuderwear, towels, trousers, shirts and similar items. The tray is for smaller articles, such as shaving equipment, handkerchiefs, socks, and personal items. The contents of the foot locker are kept netly arranged,

Clothing
Your clothing should be hung on clothes hangers. This allows the clothes to air and helps to eliminate wrinkles. To promote uniformity for inspections, similar items are grouped tohether. The longer items, such as poncho and overcoat, are hung at one end. Shorter items are placed next in order of their length.

US KOREAN WAR ERA SPECIAL UNIFORMS

As in many other theaters of war many of the clothes worn by the soldiers were produced by local seamstress shops. Sometimes these items were produced because the supply chains were not very effective and it would take a long time to get the items that were needed. An example of this situation would be when a soldier was promoted. The next rank pacthes may not be available at the front so theater-made ones were employed.

Another instance that would merit the production of un-authorized clothing was the members of a unit deciding to create a tour jacket or pilots wanting to have a large patch showing a particular design to be sewn on their flight jackets.

US KOREAN WAR ERA AVIATION UNIFORMS

The USAF units and aircraft of the Korean War are significant because the Korean War (25 June 1950 – 27 July 1953) was the first shooting war for the newly independent United States Air Force. It was the first time U.S. jet aircraft entered into battle. Air Force F-86 Sabre jets took control of the skies, as American fighter pilots bested Soviet-built MiG-15 fighters in combat against aircraft, Soviet tactics, and, on some occasions, Soviet pilots of the Soviet 64th Fighter Aviation Corps. World War II-era prop-driven F-51D Mustangs were pressed into the ground-air support role, and large formations of B-29 Superfortresses flew for the last time on strategic bombardment missions. The Korean War also saw the first large-scale use of rotary-wing helicopters.

The USAF suffered 1,841 battle casualties, of which 1,180 were killed in action. It lost 1,466 aircraft to hostile action or other causes.
