This is a German WWI pickelhaube helmet. Late war felt construction. As the war progressed leather became unavailable
so the manufacturers turned to felt as a material. This choice had several problems. Starting with the fact that it
requires cyanide to process, which exposed workers to a serious health risk. In addition, felt is not a strong material.
The helmets would tear fairly easily.
