The following gallery features miscellaneous equipment and home front items that were issued to German armed forces and civilians during WWI. This period is also known as Imperial Germany.

WWI GERMAN ARMY STICK GRANADE - This is one of the most iconics weapons of WWI and WWII. The stick grenade consists of an explosive charge attached to the end of a stick.


WWI GERMAN BODY ARMOR - The German forces experimented with armor as a means to protect the soldier in the battlefield. The example shown here protectst the chest area.


WWI GERMAN ARMY GAS MASK AND CARRIER the gas mask protected the soldier against one of the deadliest weapons used during WWI, gas attacks. The mask is of rubber construction. It is carried in a metal canister.


WWI GERMAN ARMY GAS MASK - Gas attacks were widely used during WWI. This is the gas mask that was used by the German army.



WWI GERMAN ARMY CANTEEN - This is a metal canteen that was used by the German Army during WWI and a few years before.




WWI GERMAN MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS

The soldiers from the various wars have always carried personal items to the field. This was one simple way in which the person could remeber the connections to friends and family left at home. Other items featured on this page include insignia, patches, etc.




WWI GERMAN IRON CROSS PENDANT - This is an example of some of the military jewlery that soldiers or their family could purchase. An Iron Cross adorns the cover of this piece.


WWI GERMAN IRON CROSS PENDANT - This is a hinged pendant that when opened holds two photographs. A small Iron Cross is placed at the front. The main body is of silver color.


WWI GERMAN ARMY WATCH PHOB - This is an item that would be purchased privately by the soldier or the family of the soldier. Iron Cross mottiff.


WWI GERMAN ARMY SHOULDER BOARDS - This is a set of imperial German army shoulder boards. Blue border and metal insignia.




WWI GERMAN INFANTRY CAP SKULL This is one of the most intimidating cap badges that was used during WWI. Of metal construction. Four holes are found in startegic places so it cab be sewn to a hat.




WWI GERMAN HELMETS

The design of the German helmets during World War One were very interesting. Older designs such as the Pickelhaube were still in use. these helmets did not provide much protection to the soldier. However, at the same time this time period witnessed the birth of the Stahlhelm, which was the basis for the helmets worn in WWII. These helmets were very innovative and provided much better protection to the soldier.




WWI GERMAN ARMY M-16 HELMET This is an interesting M-16 German army helmet. Complete with the liner and chin strap. The interesting thing about it are all the stamps used to ship it home.

WWI GERMAN ARMY FELT PICKELHAUBE HELMET This is a late war Pickelhaube helmet. Felt was used to make it as leather was becoming scarce at the time. Metal accessories.


WWI GERMAN ARMY FREIKORPS HELMET - Of metal construction. Complete with the a decal of a shield divided in four sections. The helmet was compressed on the sides.



WWI GERMAN BELT BUCKLES

The design of the German belt buckle during WWI consisted of a metal body with insignia and writing displayed in the front. Different variations of the content placed in the front were found because the different German states had their own design. The buckle was attached to the belt via the use of two prongs. The same basic design was used during WWII.




WWI GERMAN ARMY BELT AND BUCKLE This is the standard pattern for the German army. The design consisted of a crown displayed in the center and surrounded by a wreath.


WWI GERMAN ARMY BELT BUCKLE This is another example of the standard buclke used by the army. The words "Gott mit Uns" was displayed in the upper section. It translates to "God with us".


WWWI GERMAN BELT BUCKLE - This is the buckle from one of the German states. The words "Fuchtlos Und Trew" are written on the perimeter. A shield with two deer to the side is displayed in the center.


WWI GERMAN BELT BUCKLE - A very interesting and attractive belt buckle. It has the head of a mythical bird wearing a crown in the center and it is surrounded by laurels.


WWI GERMAN STATE BELT BUCKLE Of brass color. Metal construction. The design consists of a silver wreath with a German helmet placed in the center. The words "Frout Heil" are placed on top.



WWI IMPERIAL GERMANY SWORDS AND BAYONETS

Imperial German soldiers wore a series of swords, bayonets and other edge weapons. Many of these items were developed or improved during WWI. some of the edge weapons were meant for combat. Others were designed to make the soldier look good at parades, parties, etc.

This is an identification and price guide for the edge weapons and accutrements of Imperial Germany. This section has been created to assist the enthusiast determine what items they have and how much they are worth.




WWI GERMAN ARMY MUSICIAN SWORD - Distinguished primarily by its large, bowl shaped crossguard. A large imperial eagle is attached to its side. This sword has an etched blade.


WWI ARMY OFFICER LIONHEAD SWORD - This sword a beautiful pommel in the shape of a lion head. The eyes of the lion had red stones that ressembled rubbies. Wire wrapped handguard.


WWI GERMAN ARMY BAYONET - This was the standard bayonet of the German imperial armed forces. Distinguished by its large bolo type blade which could have a serrated back.


WWI IMPERIAL ARMY EARTZ BAYONET - This is an earlier version of the German bayonet. Thinner blade with a leather scabbard equipped with brass ends. The handguard has an "S" shape.




WWI GERMAN IMPERIAL S1871 BAYONET - This is another example of an early German bayonet. Brass handle with finger grooves. This example does not have a scabbard. "S" type handguard.


GERMAN WWI ARMY OFFICER DOVEHEAD SWORD - This is the basic design for an officer's sword. smooth silver pommel and spine with a bakelite handle. Black scabbard with a single suspension ring.


PRUSSIAN ARMY OFFICER SWORD - This sord has a large bowl handguard with cut-out design in the shape of an eagle. Black bakelite handle. Silver color with a silver scabbard.


WWI GERMAN ARMY SWORD TRODDEL - This is an accoutrement for the sword. Of cloth construction with a ball with fringes at the end. This device came in multiple colors to indicate specific branches.




WWI GERMAN ARMY S98/05 BAYONET - Instituted in 1905. This bayonet was the standard edge weapon of the German armed forces during WWI. Complete with a knot and leather frog.


WWI GERMAN ARMY S98/05 BAYONET - This is the standard bayonet for the German armed forces during WWI and before. It attaches to the Mauser rifle. Wooden handle construction. Stout blade type.


WWI GERMAN ARMY MODEL 1899 SWORD - This is a German Army ceremonial sword. Light weight construction. Wooden handle with a handguard and crossguard. The end of the crossguard has two rectangular openings.


GERMAN SWORD - The handle is made of wood and secured via the use of two rivets. The scabbard is made of leather with brass fittings. Multi-face blade.




WWI GERMAN ARMY LIONHEAD OFFICER SWORD - This another example of a ruby eyed lionhead sword. Gold tones are applied to the metal parts of the handle. Black bakelite grip with wire wrapping.


GERMAN WWI ARMY LIONHEAD WITH RUBY EYES OFFICER SWORD - The lionhead sword was one of the most beautifully decoarted swords used by the German army. Complete with a single suspension ring on the scabbard.


GERMAN WWI S98/05 SERRATED BAYONET - The handles are made of wood with angled grooves. Held together by two rivets. The scabbard of this example is heavily dented. Stout blade.


WWI GERMAN HUNTING CLUB CUTLAS - The hunting clubs in Germany issued extravagant edge weapons to their members. These highly decorated blades were a symbol of pride.




GERMAN WWI ARMY MAUSER SERRATED BAYONET - The S98/05 bayonet was used extensively by German forces during WWI. The example shown here has a serrated back. Very stout construction.


WWI GERMAN LION HEAD ARTILLERY SWORD - The item featured here is a beautifuly made Lino head army officer sword. With Ruby eyes. Black bakelite handle with gold wire wrapping.


WWI GERMAN ARMY SWORD - This is a high quality Army officer's sword. Wire wrapped handle. complete with the scabbard.


WWI GERMAN CAVALRY SWORD - Complete with the scabbard which has a single suspension ring. Wire wrapped handle with a square pommel.




GERMAN WWI ARMY SWORD - This is a German sword used by the army during WWI. Complete with the scabbard which has a single suspension ring.


WWI GERMAN MINE WORKER SWORD - The item featured here is a sword that was issued to mine workers. Used during parades. The scabbard is missing.


WWI GERMAN ARMY SWORD - This is a black colored handle. Silver pommel with a pommel and hand guard. Complete with the scabbard.


WWI GERMAN CUSTOM MADE EDGE WEAPON - The item featured here appears to be a bayonet blade with a handle made from the bust of a soldier.




WWI GERMAN CAVALRY SWORD - This is a German cavalry sword. As issued during WWI. Complete with the scabbard.
