WWI GERMAN ARMY GAS MASK
This is a German gas mask. As used during WWI. The main body is made of a lighweight chamois cloth or leather.
Two clear lenses are surrounded by a heavy duty metal frame. The lenses are plastic and can yellow over time.
The filter is screwed to a metal base at the bottom of the mask. Several holes dot the bottom of the filter to
allow for air intake into the filtration material.

A set of straps attached to different points of the main body serve to secure the gas mask to the head of the soldier.
In this example the owner wrote his name across one of the straps.
These masks generally do not age well. They become fragile and stiff over time.
The mask was issued inside a metal container. Very similar to the one used in WWII but shorter.

of the reproductions is improving. The collector must become familiarized with the construction style
