WWII German Luftwaffe Summer Dress Hat -
The name Luftwaffe is derived from the words "Luft"= air and "Waffe"=weapon, and is a generic
German term for an air force. It is also the official name for two of the four historic
German air forces, the Wehrmacht air arm founded in 1933 and disbanded in 1946.
In the summer and autumn of 1940, the Luftwaffe lost the Battle of Britain over the skies
of England, the first all-air battle. Following the military failures on the Eastern Front,
from 1942 onwards, the Luftwaffe went into a steady, gradual decline that saw it outnumbered
and overwhelmed by the sheer number of Allied aircraft being deployed against it. Towards
the end of the war, the Luftwaffe was no longer a major factor.
This is a German WWII Luftwaffe Summer Dress hat.
The design of the hat consists of a
white cotton
blend body with a black elastic mid section. A black leather visor with a
double buckle leather chin strap which is attached to the main body by a
pair of black metal domed shape buttons. One on each side of the hat.
Red piping is applied to the mid section, indicating an Artillery unit.
A Luftwaffe eagle is placed on the upper section of the peak. An officer's
grade cockade is just beneath it. Both items are secured to the hat by
metal prongs.
The eagle is depicted in flight. The wings are fully spread. Two rows of
plumeage per wing. One talon is clutching a swastika while the other is being
held up in the air.
This page is a recognition and identification guide for WWII German hats. Multiple
detailed photos of a specific sample are provided. Descriptions point out clearly defined points
that should be noted.
One of the most commonly asked questions is "How much is my WWII German hat worth?". A price
guide is included here to address this question. The value of the hats is reviewed
over a period of several years. A trend can be observed. The present worth of the German
headgear in the collector's market is illustrated.

The inside of the hat shows a white leather sweatband. The crown has a clear plastic
dianond shape insert sewn in. The name of the
manufacturer has been silk
screened to the plastic section. It reads KARL KUNGI, HERRENERUKEL, OSSREIL.
No RZM paper tag is found.
A paper strip is located inside the plastic section. This is normally where the name of
the soldier would be written. This example has a hand written number 57.
