MILITARY AND CIVILIAN GERMAN HEADGEAR OF WWII - The Third Reich employed a large variety of hats. The variations of designs and materials had increase the collectability of the items. The quality of manufacturing of the hats is superb. Most of the hats had some type of eagle and swastika combination.

Hats were issued to military, para-military, political and civilian organizations. This section of the website will cover all these organizations.

The following gallery features miscellaneous hats that were issued to German armed forces and civilians during WWII. The data provided here allows the militaria collector to identify the headhear of the Third Reich and provides a price guide to determine the value of the German WWII hats.

WWII GERMAN MILITARY HATS

The German military forces of WWII were encompassed under an organization known as the Wehrmarcht. The different components consisted of the Army (Heer), Air Force (Luftwaffe) and the Navy (Kriegsmarine). This section of the website shows examples of some of the hats that were used by these groups.


WWII GERMAN LUFTWAFFE SIGNAL HAT - The signal corps was a group in charge of setting up communications. The hat featured here belonged to a member of that group. Blue wool construction.


WWII GERMAN LUFTWAFFE M-43 FIELD CAP - Field caps were of wool construction. The bodies were very flexible which made them suitable for field use. Of blue color with a Luftwaffe cloth eagle in front.


WWII GERMAN LUFTWAFFE M-43 HAT This is another example of a field cap. Of blue/gray wool construction. Ear flaps secure to the front and button up with two aluminum buttons.


WWII GERMAN LUFTWAFFE SUMMER HAT Of white body construction. A silver metal Luftwaffe eagle and cockade are found in front. With black leather chin strap and visor.




WWII GERMAN ARMY SIGNALS OFFICER HAT - green wool construction with a dark green band in the center. Aluminum eagle and cockade are attached to the front. Officer chin strap. Black visor.


WWII GERMAN ARMY TROPICAL HAT - Used by the Afrika Korps. This is a tropical hat/helmet. Of lightweight construction. Khaki color with a domed crown. Red liner.


WWII GERMAN ARMY NCO HAT Of green wool construction. Aluminum accessories. Leather visor and chin strap. White piping found in upper areas.


WWII GERMAN ARMY WINTER HAT Used in the Eastern front and other extreme cold weather areas. White fur lining with a green wool backing. Eagle is sewn to the front.

WWII GERMAN NAVY FLAK FIELD HAT This is a field hat that was used by Kriegsmarine Flak crews. Of wool construction. Green color. Cloth eagle attached to the front.

WWII GERMAN POLITICAL HATS

There were several political organizations during the Third Reich. The primary was the nazi party. The party grew out of smaller political groups with a nationalist orientation that formed in the last years of World War I. However, other labor organizations were also active in WWII promoting the Nazi ideology.

WWII GERMAN VETERAN HAT This is an example of one of the hats employed by one of the veteran organizations. Of wool construction. Gold color cockade with a matching chin strap.


WWII GERMAN NSKK HAT This is a wool overseas hat used by the NSKK. One side has a bullion eagle. The hat retains the original RZM tag.



WWII GERMAN FIRE AND POLICE HATS

Shortly after Hitler took power, he started politicizing the organizations such as the fire and police departments. One of the first steps was to modify current uniforms to include the swastika. The Third Reich employed their police force as an agent of repression. They were not only crime fighters but kept tabs on any individual or organization who disagreed with Hitler and the Nazi party.

The following are some examples of the hats that were used by these groups.



EARLY GERMAN FIRE FIGHTER HAT - Of wool construction. Black body with a solid black mid-section. Pink piping is found. Small metal eagle on top. Tri-color roundel placed just below.


WWII GERMAN FIRE POLICE HAT - Dark blue wool construction with three strands of pink piping. Mid section is black. The visor is made of black leather. A police eagle is found in mid section.


WWII GERMAN FIRE FIGHTER HAT - The main body is of wool construction. Orange color with a black mid-section. Small metal state eagle, bronze color found on top. Tri-color roundel in mid section.


WWII GERMAN FIRE FIGHTER OFFICER HAT - Dark blue wool body with upper pink piping following the contour. State silver metal eagle on top. Roundel found in mid section.




WWII GERMAN POLICE SHAKO HAT Also known as the "coffee can" hat due to its interesting shape. Large aluminum police eagle in center. Complete with black leather chin strap and visor.


1940 WWII GERMAN FIELD POLICE OFFICER HAT This is an early police officer hat. As used by the field police. Of wool construction. Leather black visor.






WWII HAT EAGLES OF THE THIRD REICH

The German armed forces as well as the multiple governmental and civilian organizations adorned their hats with eagles and other accoutrements. Most of them included the swastika as part of their design. This section of the website is dedicated to the study of this interesting aspect of the German uniforms of WWII.


WWII GERMAN ARMY HAT EAGLE - Of metal construction. Nicely detailed eagle with the head facing to the right. The wings are fully extended. The eagle clutches a wreath with a Swastika inde.


WWII GERMAN HAT COCKADE - This is a two piece set. All metal construction. Each piece has its own set of prongs. The main section is in the shape of a wreath surrounding a metal circle.


WWII GERMAN DLV HAT EAGLE - The DLV was a civilian aircraft organization. It was the starting point for the Luftwaffe. This set of eagle and cockade were used in the DLV hat. Of metal construction.


WWII GERMAN EASTERN PEOPLE EAGLE - This is a smaller size eagle. the wings are fully extended and show feathers in a semi-circular pattern. The eagle clutches a wreath with a swastika in the center.




WWII GERMAN CIVIL SERVICE HAT EAGLE - Of metal construction. The wings are fully extended and are short and stubby. The head faces to the left. The common theme of the eagle clutching a wreath with a swastika in the center.


WWII GERMAN TROPICAL HAT/HELMET SHIELDS - This is a set of two metal shields. One of them bears the national colors. The other shield shows the army eagle. The shields were attached to the tropical helmet.


WWII GERMAN SS EAGLE AND SKULL - This is a set of a Skull and eagle worn by SS officers. Of metal construction. Each section has its own set of prongs. The eagle has the wings fully spread.


WWII GERMAN CUSTOMS HAT EAGLE - This is the eagle worn on the hat of Customs officials. Of metal construction. The eagle has a vaulted design. The tip of the wings point upwardly. - Coming soon




WWII GERMAN ARMY HAT EAGLE - This is the standard metal hat device that was used by the German Army during WWII. Consisting of an eagle with the wings fully extended.


WWII GERMAN INDUSTRY POLICE HAT EAGLE - This is an example of a hat eagle that was used by the many private police forces that were established during the Third Reich.


WWII GERMAN LUFTWAFFE HAT EAGLE - This is a mid to late war metal Luftwaffe hat eagle. Shows an eagle in flight clutching a swastika. Two prongs are found in back.


WWII GERMAN EARLY POLICE HAT EAGLE - This is a German WWII early police hat eagle. Consisting of frosted design. An oval shaped wreath with an eagle in the center.

WWII GERMAN VETERAN ORGANIZATION HAT INSIGNIA - Of metal construction. Two piece design. The center is painted red and white. Early type.


WWII GERMAN RAD HAT INSIGNIA - Of metal construction. Cut-out design. This is a German WWII hat badge used by the RAD organization.
