WWII JAPANESE ARMY SAMURAI SWORD - KATANA - #16 -
The Japanese Samurai sword has become one of the top military antiques in terms of value and desirability.

This is a WWII Japanese Army Katana. With Imperial Army fittings. Metal scabbard with a single hanger ring and metal end cap. The tsuba is of flat metal construction. This is very much the standard sword issued during WWII.

The handle on this sample has been incorrectly re-wrapped. The menuki is missing. The end of the handle has a black, metal cap. The blade is locked to the scabbard by the use of a metal flat spring. The blade is unlocked by pressing on a metal button on the side of the handle.

The tang has inscribed signatures. The tang is a simple, flat piece of steel. Typical of WWII style fittings. It is very important not to remove the rust from this section as it helps identify the age of the sword.

This page is a recognition and identification guide for Samurai swords. Multiple detailed photos of a specific sample are provided. Descriptions point out clearly defined points that should be noted.

One of the most commonly asked questions is "How much is my Samurai Sword worth?". A price guide is included here to address this question. The value of the swords is reviewed over a period of several years. A trend can be observed. The present worth of the edge weapons in the collector's market is illustrated.

The hole in the tang allows a wooden peg to go through and secure the handle to the blade. Faintly red marks indicate the placement of additional marking in the sword. Often times white paint was employed to place additional markings on the blade.
